National Express East Anglia rail strike called off as unions claim victory

A strike on a National Express East Anglia (NXEA) rail line was called off last night as unions claimed a major victory in the fight for improved pay and conditions, according to the Guardian.

The 48-hour strike on the busy commuter line had been due to continue to midnight today. Industrial action yesterday caused travel chaos as strike action all but wiped out services. Fewer than 5% of trains were able to run on NXEA routes, which include London to Stansted airport in Essex.

But the revised offer on pay from NXEA was accepted, which in broad terms will stack up to 3.5% over two years.

General secretary of the RMT union, Bob Crow, said: “No-one should be in any doubt that this improved offer has been won through the commitment and determination of our members at National Express East Anglia to secure a fair deal.”
