Local government pay deal talks still under way

Local government employers are still locked in talks with unions over this year’s pay deal.

All three unions – Unison, GMB and Unite – met with the Local Government Association (LGA) again yesterday to try to agree a “fairer” deal for employees, after rejecting the 0.5% pay award offered last month.

Unions had claimed the rise on the table was equivalent to an increase of 3p per hour for the lowest paid staff, and would not help workers sufficiently in the tough economic climate.

But yesterday, employers and unions still failed to reach an agreement, despite the 1 June deadline to settle – originally imposed by the LGA – fast approaching.
