Employer RSI warning
Employers are not doing enough to protect their workers from repetitive strain injury (RSI), the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy has warned. It cited statistics from the Health and Safety Executive showing the number of new cases of RSI caused by work rising from 86,000 to 115,000 between 2006 and 2007.
NMC bullying accusation
The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) has been accused of having an ingrained culture of “racism and bullying”. Labour MP Jim Devine made the accusation at Westminster as he read out testimonies from whistleblowers. The NMC has denied the claims.
Nurses suffer violence
One in three nurses in the UK suffers frequent violent attacks at work, a study has suggested. Research in the journal Occupational Medicinestudied nearly 40,000 nurses in 10 European countries and found that 29% of UK nurses had been involved in violent attacks with patients or their relatives. The Healthcare Commission and Royal College of Psychiatrists in February concluded that half of UK nurses on mental health wards had been physically assaulted at work.

A 44-year-old registered adult nurse who failed to disclose that she had been diagnosed with pulmonary tuberculosis has been struck off the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) register. Elsie Maphanga, from Weston-Super-Mare, falsely declared that she had never suffered from any chest infection, when in fact she had been diagnosed in 1984 with pulmonary tuberculosis, said the NMC.
