HR consulting and outsourcing firm Capgemini is to axe 450 jobs following after HM Revenue & Custom’s (HMRCs) decision to reduce the scale of an IT contract with the firm.
The company, which provides a range of services to the public and private sectors, said its ‘Aspire’ IT services contract was being scaled back as a result of government efficiency savings.
Offices in Newcastle and Basingstoke are to close with the loss of 139 jobs. Chief executive David Boulter said details regarding redundancies at other Aspire sites were in the process of being finalised.
The Aspire deal was one of the world’s largest IT outsourcing deals when it was awarded in 2004 and constituted one of the largest contracts in IT outsourcing history.

“Capgemini is working with outplacement service providers to support all staff affected by the closure and help them to explore other employment opportunities,” Boulter said.
