McDonald’s gives fast food chain staff in China a pay rise of more than 12%

McDonald’s is to increase the pay of its 50,000 Chinese staff by up to 56%, according to reports in the country’s state newspaper.

Almost all McDonald’s workers in China will receive raises of at least 12%, the China Daily said.

McDonald’s China chief executive Jeffrey Schwartz told the paper: “We have raised salaries in China many times, but this is the first time there has been such a large increase covering so many people.”

McDonald’s came under pressure last month when a report alleged that its part-time workers in Guangdong were being paid less than the legal minimum wage of about 50p an hour. The company insisted it was complying with the law.
