Trade and industry secretary Alistair Darling has appointed four new members of the independent Low Pay Commission, which advises the government on the national minimum
wage (NMW).
The new commissioners are: CBI director of HR policy Susan Anderson; John Hannett, general secretary of retail union Usdaw; TUC deputy general secretary Frances O’Grady; and Neil Goulden, chief executive of the Gala Coral Group.

The appointments are for three years and are paid at £232.72 a day.
Darling said: “Those serving on the commission play an important role in the modern British economy, getting the right rate of pay for millions of workers who need it most and for business.”
The latest recommendation on the adult NMW – an increase from £5.35 to £5.52 an hour – comes into effect in October.
