TUPE appeal decision

The Court of Appeal has upheld a tribunal decision in the case of Cross v British Airways that a normal retirement age does not transfer under TUPE regulations. The court held a ‘normal retire-ment age’ is not the same as a contractual retirement age, and is not one of the ‘rights, powers, duties and liabilities’ which transfers under TUPE.

UK staff feel less secure

UK workers feel less secure in their jobs than staff almost anywhere else in Europe, according to new figures. One in five (21%) UK employees still believes there is a possibility they will be laid off in the next year.

MP slams chef’s comments

An MP has told TV chef Antony Worrall Thompson he should “stick to cooking” after he criticised the minimum wage. Economic secretary to the Treasury, Ed Balls, was reacting to the chef’s proposals that tips should replace the minimum wage to encourage better standards in eateries.

New DTI ministers named

Trade and industry secretary Alistair Darling has named three new DTI ministers. Margaret Hodge is minister for industry and the regions, Ian McCartney is minister for trade, investment and foreign affairs, and Jim Fitzpatrick is parliamentary under secretary for employment relations.
