Staff fears in police mergers
Public sector union Unison has called a meeting with police officials to raise concerns about the proposed mergers of forces across England and Wales. General secretary Dave Prentis said Unison had made it clear to Home Office ministers and the Association of Police Authorities that its members needed a high level of support to help prevent staff uncertainty.

BA pilots prepare for strike
British Airways pilots are being advised by their union to borrow 25,000 each to prepare for a long strike over their pension scheme. The airline will announce plans by the end of March to cut the cost of its main pension scheme, which has a deficit of 900m. The British Airline Pilots Association is worried that BA will change the scheme from final salary to career average.

Western European states should open their labour markets to workers from Eastern Europe, according to a European Commission report. The UK, along with the Irish Republic and Sweden, allowed full access to its labour market. The report said the UK’s economy was boosted by the influx, and dismissed fears that countries would be undermined by a flood of cheap workers.
