A group of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) sufferers has lost an appeal for the right to claim compensation from airlines.
The House of Lords ruled against the eight DVT victims, who had been fighting for four years to sue several airlines.
They claimed the potentially fatal blood clots were caused by conditions on the flights, such as cramped seats. But the airlines argued that they were only liable for “accidents”.

The victims’ lawyers have said they may take the fight to the European courts.
About 8,500 UK air travellers develop DVT each year, with between 500 and 1,000 passengers dying as a result.
