The CBI has begun its search for the successor to Sir Digby Jones as director general, with headhunters expected to be appointed next month.
Jones, who has been head of the employers’ group since January 2000, will step down at the end of next year after staying on for two more years than is usual.
John Sunderland, president of the CBI and chairman of Cadbury Schweppes, is overseeing the search for a new director general, who will lead the group until 2011. Sunderland said the CBI would be casting its net “very broadly”.

Several headhunting firms have been contacted about how they would approach the task of finding a replacement for Jones.
His successor is likely to be announced next spring, to give the candidate time to prepare fully for taking up the role on 1 January 2007.
