Employers urged to keep tight grip on pay

The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) has warned that the latest rise in interest rates has created further challenges for employers. Its chief economist John Philpott said the quarter point rise would create a tricky backdrop for companies negotiating salaries. He urged employers to keep a tight grip on pay to avoid higher interest rate growth next year.

Most women say they face discrimination

More than eight in 10 women have felt discriminated against in the workplace because of their gender, according to a poll. Law firm Peninsula found that almost six in 10 women had been told a sexist joke by male colleagues while 74 per cent had received a sexist e-mail.

Lords rule against ‘hurt feelings’ claims

Employees will not be able to claim for injury to their feelings as part of an unfair dismissal claim, following a House of Lords judgment. The ruling in Dunnachie v Kingston upon Hull City Council overrides an earlier Court of Appeal hearing. It rules that non-financial loss should not be recoverable.
