Council staff to share £7.2m win in equal pay dispute

Council workers on Tyneside are to receive payouts of up to £8,000 each after winning a long-running equal pay row.

More than 2,000 care assistants, domestic staff, cleaners and lollipop men and women have been promised a share of £7.2m by South Tyneside Council.

The proposed agreement, which has been accepted by the GMB and Unison unions, will mean disputes going back six years can now be settled.

Payouts will be based on years of service and hours worked.

GMB spokesman, Martin Gannon, said the union welcomed the offer, but would be discussing each case individually with its members.

Council chiefs are also planning to introduce a new pay and grading structure in accordance with national agreements.

The news follows the announcement earlier this week that female NHS workers will receive payouts of up to £250,000 after a long-running equal pay dispute was resolved.
