For the first time in almost 1,300 years the job of the Archbishop of York has been advertised to the public. The advert, placed in the Church Times and the Church of England newspapers, invites worshippers to propose candidates and is part of the Church’s effort to be more democratic in choosing its bishops. It follows the resignation of the present incumbent David Hope, who is becoming a parish priest in Ilkley, Yorkshire. The successful candidate will be the Church of England’s second most senior clergyman. The first appointed Archbishop was Egbert, cousin of King Ceolwulf of Northumbria, who held the position from 735-766AD.
