People development is key leader attribute

The ability to develop people has been rated as the most important characteristic for leaders to possess.

The Contemporary Leadership Challenges survey by occupational psychologists Pearn Kandola shows that this skill and three other factors – providing strategic vision, inspiring others to achieve and driving delivery and results – were consistently identified as key leadership requirements.

The least important leadership qualities were cited as strong control skills, and versatility across functions.

The survey of more than 85 organisations from the public, private and voluntary sectors also shows the majority of respondents provide leadership development according to individual needs, rather than using ‘sheep-dip’ solutions to try and solve problems.
