Unionised fare best

Employees who are trade union members are far more likely to receive
on-the-job training, than their non-union peers. Figures released by the TUC
show that only one in four employees who are not union members are likely to
have taken part in job-related training in the past three months, whereas 39
per cent of unionised employees had participated. It cites the growth in union
learning representatives, established in 1998, as a major factor in the growth
of union supported learning.

Join the board

Skillsmart, the sector skills council for retail, is recruiting HR and
people development specialists to join its board. Desirable qualifications
include affinity with the skills agenda. The posts are unpaid, with

Leisure sector launch

Trainee chefs joined Lord Sainsbury, parliamentary under-secretary of State,
DTI and John Brackenbury, chairman of People 1st at the formal launch party of
the latest sector skills launch. People 1st was launched on 19 May for the
hospitality, tourism, leisure travel and tourism industries which employ some
1.5 million people and are collectively worth £42bn to the UK economy.  www.people1st.co.uk

Worldwide learning

Cross-functionality is on the agenda at Saint-Gobain Pipelines, as the
industrial multi- national runs a five-day leadership development programme for
its high-flying managers aged under 35. "The programme develops the key
competencies of vision, leadership, organisational awareness," said HR
director John Hool.

Using their ITQ

The Sector Skills Council for IT, telecoms and contact centres, known as
e-skills UK, is celebrating the first 25 people to complete its ITQ
qualification. To date, 3,500 ITQ learners from more than 300 employers have
been registered in the trails. The ITQ will be available across England from
autumn.  www.eskills.com
