Engineering pay

Salaries for HR staff in the engineering sector have grown modestly in the
past 12 months, according to the latest figures from the manufacturing and
engineering organisation EEF. The EEF’s pay survey shows that HR managers’
earnings grew by around 2.7 per cent between 2002 and 2003.  www.eef.org.uk

CV lies popular

Four out of five job applicants have lied on their CV to get employment,
according to new research by financial recruitment firm Portfolio Payroll and
employment lawyers, Peninsula. Almost half of the respondents admitted to lying
to get their present job, while more than two-thirds had asked a friend to act

Irish smoking ban

Ireland is set to launch a blanket ban on smoking in the workplace with
employers mainly responsible for enforcing the new law. The Irish Government is
to introduce legislation that will outlaw smoking in all enclosed workplaces
including pubs, clubs and restaurants from 29 March. People caught breaking the
rules face fines of up to £2,000.  www.irl.gov.ie

Sporting chance

Airline Air India has taken over a sports stadium in Delhi to recruit 400
new air hostesses and stewards. More than 32,000 candidates applied for the
jobs, allowing the company to impose strict criteria – including the weeding
out of candidates with acne or bad teeth.  The airline is screening around 1,200 applicants for jobs every
