The
Government has launched a partnership to help increase training opportunities
in some of the most deprived areas in the UK.
The
new initiative, Sustainable Training for Sustainable Communities, aims to
employ local people on long-term inner-city regeneration projects and is a
partnership between sector skills council CITB-Construction Skills and the
Housing Forum.
The
industry is facing a skills shortage, with 76,000 people needed each year to
meet demand and replace those leaving the industry.
The
scheme hopes to attract those who are under-represented in the construction
industry, such as women and ethnic minorities.
Under
the project the industry will increase links with further education colleges to
ensure that the right training is available locally to recruits.
Housing
Forum chairman Hugh Try said that under the scheme, organisations would be able
to meet up and share information to learn from each others successes and
mistakes.
