The
highest number of accidents in the construction sector occur while staff are
simply getting to the workplace, according to the Health and Safety Executive.
The
findings of two research projects show that most accidents happen when workers
are either walking across sites, handling materials or moving to the ‘workface’.
The
research also indicates that design changes could have prevented accidents or
lessened their severity in a significant number of cases.
Companies
also came under fire for poor accident investigation, with both studies
suggesting it was superficial, and lacking in the areas of planning and
effective safety management.
