OH urged to back blood pressure checks

OH professionals are urged to take part in this year’s Blood Pressure
Association (BPA) national blood testing week.

The initiative, which runs from 15 to 21 September, is designed to raise
awareness among the population of the importance of knowing their current blood
pressure level and how to lower it, if necessary.

One OHN taking part is Sue Hawkins, who works for electronic company
Aeroflex. She said: "The workplace is an ideal venue as we can reach
people who otherwise may not get their blood pressure checked because of
reluctance to go to their GP."

During the week, thousands of ‘pressure stations’ will be set up around the
country in GP surgeries, hospitals, pharmacies and health clubs, and OH
advisers are expected to get involved.

The BPA is also working on developing materials specifically for OH
professionals to use to improve prevention and detection of high blood
pressure.

Almost 100,000 people took the opportunity to pick up information on ways to
lower blood pressure last year and to have a free blood pressure check.
