Train
operator Connex South Eastern has lost its multi-billion pound franchise
because of its poor service record and an over-reliance on taxpayer-funded
subsidies.
The
Strategic Rail Authority (SRA) stripped Connex of its right to run the
services, which are centred on busy commuter lines into London, Kent and
Sussex.
SRA
chairman Richard Bowker said that the vast majority of Connex employees would
not be affected by the move.

RMT
general secretary Bob Crow applauded the news. "It’s time public money was
used to benefit the railway and not line the directors’ and shareholders’
pockets – rail must be brought back into public ownership", he said.
