Current
government skills and innovation policies will not succeed in making Britain a
high-performance economy capable of holding its own in the future world of
globalisation.
This
is the conclusion of the Future of Work Programme undertaken by the Economic
and Social Research Council (ESRC).
Robert
Taylor, ESRC spokesman said: “The gap between [the Government and industry’s]
perceptions, and the reality we face so often across many workplaces remains
very wide”.
The
key findings of the report include:

Government efforts to improve the quality and supply of labour are being
hindered by the ‘bewildering’ range of public bodies seeking to offer training
opportunities.

Few UK firms give top priority to the need to create highly skilled or highly
qualified workforce because their basic business activities do not require them
to do so.
