ASP
– Application Service Provider A company that hosts a client’s applications
on its own computers – typically the client will access the service via the
internet. The ASP maintains and upgrades the application and the fee to the
client can be subscription-based.
B2E
– Business-to-employee Interaction between the employer and
the employee, which usually takes place via the internet or an intranet. Online
pension or benefit schemes could be referred to as B2E services.
Broadband
Term covering the wave of high-speed connections on the internet such as
Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) and cable modems. ADSL, for instance,
works at 10 times the speed of an average modem.
Data
warehousing The centralised storage of large amounts of data on just one
database. The data can then be accessed and used for a number of different
applications.
e-HR
The term used to broadly cover the use of technology to deliver HR services and
assist in people management.
Employee
self-service Where employees access, enter, amend and interact with their
own personnel data, typically done via a portal on the internet or through an
intranet.
ERM
– Employee relationship management A system which allows employers to
manage the relationship with their employee as if they are a client.

ERP
– Enterprise Resource Planning ERP systems are big, modular back-office
information systems, which include HR, customer relationship management (CRM),
purchasing and finance systems, and which manage the important parts of a
company’s business. They also collect and track vital company data and
centralise it.
Fat
and thin clients These are client-server set-ups: fat clients hold a lot of
data on their own desktop PCs while thin clients hold minimum data and access
it via a network or the internet from a central server.
