Skills Development Scotland managers win equal pay tribunal

Two Skills Development Scotland managers have won an equal pay tribunal after objecting to a male colleague earning £10,000 more for the same work.

Mairi Buchanan and Pat Holland learned of the discrepancy in 2002 and decided to take action in 2008, when they realised the pay gap had grown, the Herald Scotland has reported.

The tribunal was held this February, and although the women have just been told about their victory, they must now wait for a remedies hearing, to settle on the size of their award.

Buchanan said: “To finally gain some parity is a huge relief, but we are all too aware there are thousands of women in a similar position.”

She added: “We are the sort of people who have never said boo to a goose. We get on with the job. Many women do that. No matter how hard they work, they think ‘I’d better not rock the boat’. This just shows you should.”
