City & guilds thinks bigger

Awarding body City & Guilds is launching e-Quals, a range of IT
qualifications developed with industry experts and targeted at those using
technology every day as part of their jobs. This will be backed up by a new
service in the spring when City & Guilds extends its dedicated e-learning
portal for learners and tutors.  www.city-and-guilds.co.uk

Nissan celebrates win

Nissan training manager Steve Pallas (pictured with Rory Bremner) received
The UK Special Training Award at the National Training Awards on behalf of the
Sunderland-based car maker. It recognised the company’s programme that trained
an extra 1,000 staff recruited for the production of new models, and
represented an investment of £4.24m and accreditation to NVQ level 2.  www.nationaltrainingawards.com

NVQs for stationers…

National retailer Stationery Box has shown its commitment to NVQs and Modern
Apprenticeships by signing an agreement to deliver vocational training to staff
in its network of 130 stores. The programme will be delivered by
Nottingham-based Protocol Skills.  www.protocol.co.uk

…and rail operator

Train operator First Great Western is offering more than 390 staff a
rail-specific NVQ. The scheme is part of a £7m revamp of the company’s customer
services division and will lead to a level 2 in Railway Operations. This
follows its other major training initiatives such as the Btec Leadership Skills
Award for 140 frontline managers and a conflict awareness training programme.  www.firstgreatwestern.co.uk

Back with blended

The original and core team members of the now-defunct Xebec are making fresh
forays into the e-learning market with the launch of their new company Balance
Learning. Managing director Chris Horseman and directors Tim Drewitt and Kim
Whitmore have kicked off with what are referred to as the world’s first
purpose-built blended learning programmes.  www.balancelearning.co.uk
