The TUC General Council has elected Brendan Barber as the new TUC general
secretary.
Currently deputy general secretary, Barber will take over from John Monks in
May, when Monks becomes general secretary of the European Trade Unions
Congress.
Barber, the only candidate, was nominated by 41 out of 69 unions,
representing 96 per cent of the TUC’s affiliated members.
Barber first joined the TUC in 1975, and was appointed to the Council of the
Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service (Acas) in 1995.
