Tablet PC
What is it? A tablet-shaped PC on which you can write with a digital
pen or stylus, and that claims to offer all of the functionality of today’s
notebook computers. Inside it runs Microsoft’s Windows XP operating system, and
externally, it’s being designed by a number of Microsoft’s "hardware
partners" such as Compaq, Acer, Fujitsu, Siemens and Toshiba. Some models
will come with a detachable keyboard so it can be used as a conventional
computer. Users can write directly on the screen using the digital pen and the
input panel utility and then save your notes in your own handwriting or convert
them to typed input for exporting to other applications. The pen is also used
to carry out those operations typically done by a mouse or keyboard, such as
open menus and select from them (a mouse can be used if you prefer).
Do I really need one? Yes, if you want to be perceived as the most
state-of-the-art HR professional around. The main advantage of the Tablet is
that it lets you use a notebook computer in places where it’s sometimes
difficult, such as standing while on the move. It is also more convenient to
take into meetings than a traditional one, or indeed on crowded public
transport. Members of the workforce who have to go on site or oversee
operations on a manufacturing floor could also take advantage of it. The Tablet
supports docking stations and common accessories so it should integrate with
most PC environments.
