Public services workers needed in Outer Hebrides

The
Government has been asked to move at least 300 public service workers from
British cities to the Outer Hebrides because the area has suffered the greatest
population decline in Scotland.

According
to the Scotsman newspaper, Western Isles Enterprise is in talks with the
Department for Work and Pensions about the relocation of between 50 and 100
debt collectors to the islands.

Now,
the Western Isles Council wants hundreds more government workers to boost the
local economy.

The
population of the Western Isles has fallen by 10.5 per cent during the past
decade – from 29,600 to 26,502.

The
Western Isles Council is also looking at creating jobs in other areas such as
renewable energy, broadband internet, Gaelic culture and heritage and
decentralisation of government jobs.
