Boardroom still out of reach for HR

Human resources still has little influence on boardroom decisions according
to an online poll of Personnel Today readers.

The News Barometer survey on PersonnelToday.com reveals that 85 per cent of
users feels that HR wasn’t involved enough in running the business at the
highest level.

The 123 HR professionals who responded highlight the lack of influence that
HR has in the boardroom, despite research published last year in Personnel
Today showing that earnings per share of FTSE 100 companies was significantly
higher when HR was on the board.

Commenting on the research, Bruce Warman, personnel director at Vauxhall,
said it was up to HR professionals to earn more influence through a better
understanding of how business operates.

"It’s up to us to make sure we have influence, but that comes with a
big responsibility and some challenges we might not be used to. HR has to
become more commercially relevant and understand the business as a whole,"
he said.

This follows a study by Richmond Events’ HR Forum where 52 per cent of HR
directors said they had limited influence at board level.
