Education - further and higher

Robert Gordon University

by Personnel Today 7 Sep 2005
by Personnel Today 7 Sep 2005

HR specific/related courses: Postgraduate Certificate/Diploma/MSc in Human Resource Management, a three-stage course with the PG Dip leading to graduate membership of the CIPD. The course is full or part-time, with the full time route taking 15 weeks for the certificate, 30 weeks for the diploma and an additional 15 weeks for the MSc. The course can also be taken on a Continuing Professional Development (CPD) basis.

Founded: The name Robert Gordon has been synonymous with education in Aberdeen since 1750 when the original college was founded from the monies left in his will. With the addition of Gray’s School of Art in 1885, the School of Pharmacy in 1898 and The Scott Sutherland School of Architecture in 1957, the original college has evolved over the years into a full university – a leading institution of learning still able to draw upon this rich heritage. Full University status was awarded in 1992.

College CV:  Based in the city of Aberdeen, the university has around 11,000 students with further students studying via e-learning – for which it continues to be a leader on the virtual campus.  It was named best new university in 1998 by the Financial Times and has an outstanding record of graduate employment. It attracts many international students and has developed overseas academic links through the EC-funded Erasmus network. Expanding its cultural and industrial links with overseas organisations has created opportunities for students to study and work abroad. The university’s location in the oil capital of Europe is reflected in a range of commercial activities taking place at the university and in the Offshore Management Centre, which is partly industry-funded. The Aberdeen Business School, based on the Garthdee campus (overlooking the River Dee) is the biggest provider of business management education in the north and north-east of Scotland.

Entry: A degree or degree equivalent qualification or significant management experience. Direct entry to the masters stage may be considered.

Star HR academics: Jackie Connon, whose research includes work on employee motivation offshore.
