This
week’s training news

Music
school

HMV
has launched a new initiative to offer young people work placements and formal
training that could lead to a vocational qualification. The music retailer has
teamed up with qualification provider Protocol to offer Foundation Modern
Apprentice-ships in retail operations and customer service.  www.protocol.co.uk

New
Laing centre

Laing
Training has opened a fourth construction training centre, which will be
dedicated solely to safety. It will train all Laing staff with a range of CITB
accredited courses including first aid and scaffold safety. The firm currently
spends around £3.5m a year on training but with 400 employees in training at
any one time, another centre was needed.  www.laing-homes.co.uk

Pioneering
course

The
joint management team at Sandwell Council has completed a pioneering training
course to improve services for disabled people. All 22 managers completed an
interactive telephone test designed to bring a better appreciation of the
disabled. The scheme was piloted by 100 council employees last autumn and is
now being offered to all staff.

Heineken
e-learning

Heineken
is using a new e-learning programme to improve the effectiveness of its
managers. The firm, which employs more than 40,000 staff in 170 countries, is
using a system provided by training company Intellexis. The courses enable
managers to apply financial skills to all aspects of the business. Similar
training has been in place for six years but moving online makes it cheaper and
more widely available.  www.intellexis.com

Virtual
med school

Fifty
leading medical institutes from around the world are meeting in Scotland to
discuss proposals for the first international virtual medical school. The
initiative will use the latest training technology to provide health workers
with international expertise. E-learning provider Epic carried out a feasibility
study and the firm claims the project will have a major impact on higher
medical education.  www.epic.co.uk
