HR Academy: University of Gloucestershire

HR-specific/related courses: MA/Postgraduate Diploma/PG Certificate
in Human Resources Development, full/part-time study, HNC, part-time HND or
full/part-time degree (this offers a full or part-time work placement
opportunity). Successful completion of the PG Certificate and Diploma gives
graduate membership of the CIPD. The university also runs CIPD Core Management,
Core Personnel and Development, Personnel and Development Electives, as well as
bespoke courses for corporates.

Founded: Roots go back to the 1800s to the local Schools of Art and
Science and the Mechanics and Evening Institutes. Cheltenham and Gloucester
College of Higher Education was created from a merger in 1990 and it gained
university status in 2001.

College CV: One of the country’s newest universities, it operates
from three campuses in Cheltenham with a fourth opening this year in
Gloucester. There are just under 10,000 full-time and part-time students. It
has received 20-plus QAA ratings in three subject areas and four out of five in
three research areas. Staff from the HR faculty within the business school are
also engaged within the Human Resource Management Research Centre. Founded in
1991, the centre undertakes consultancy, bespoke training and academic
research.

Entry: For the MA, a good honours degree or equivalent , or a
relevant postgraduate or professional qualification, or appropriate employment
experience. For the HNC/HND/degree, applicants must satisfy the minimum
university entry requirements.

Star academics: Adrian Thornhill, head of HRM, who has co-authored
three books on downsizing and redundancy and managing change. Mike Milmore,
whose main areas of interest are recruitment and selection, HR planning,
performance appraisal and strategic HRM. He has conducted research and
consultancy in these areas. Barry Baker, whose maininterests are ethical
HRM,occupational psychology including psychometric testing, stress
andperformance.
