HR-related/specific courses: MSc/PgDip Human Resource Management,
which can be taken full- (12 months for the MSc and nine months for the diploma)
or part-time (24 months plus three to six months for the dissertation for the
MSc and 24 months for the diploma); MSc/PG Human Resource
Management/Development, part-time (two years), leading to CIPD graduate
membership; CIPD Certificate in Training Practice (evening or afternoon basis
for 16 weeks); CIPD Certificate in Personnel Practice; CIPD Certificate in
Training Practice; CIPD Core Management. The BSc (Hons) Business Studies where
it is possible to specialise in Human Resource Management in the final year.
Salford also holds short courses, in-company training and tailored corporate
programmes.
Founded: It was originally the Royal Salford Technical Institute,
set-up in 1896, and became a university in 1967.
College CV: Located 1.5 miles from Manchester city centre, Salford is
one of the UK’s largest universities with 18,000 students, including 2,000
international students from 80 countries. It is a popular university with
employers because of its record in applied courses (Salford pioneered the
concept of sandwich degrees in the 1950s). Two-thirds of its undergraduate
courses offer work placements, many of which contribute towards the final
degree award. In the Teaching Quality Assessments by HEFCE (Higher Education
Funding Council for England) since 1996, the 15 subject areas have scored an
average of 21 out of 24 points. The School of Management, where the HR courses
take place, draws on an international and national network of affiliates from
industry as well as the academic world. It also designs and implements
postgraduate qualification programmes for specific companies and corporate
clients include GEC Plessey, British Aerospace, Norwich Union and several NHS
trusts. It is a CIPD Centre of Excellence.
Entry: For the MSc courses, a good honours degree or equivalent or a
stipulated level of performance on the Access Certificate or Diploma. Some work
experience in HR is desirable for the MSc course leading to graduate membership
