Consignia directors refuse 10 per cent pay increase

Two directors at Consignia have turned down a recommended 10
per cent pay rise, even though it has been approved by the Department of Trade
and Industry.

Consignia chief executive John Roberts and managing director
of mail services Jerry Cope have refused to accept the increase, after it was
labelled insensitive.

Around 145,000 postmen and women are involved in a pay
dispute with the company.

Consignia also plans to cut 30,000 jobs and in doing so
faces the prospect of a national strike.

A Consignia spokesman said Roberts is paid £205,000 a year
and Cope £140,000, but he stressed the chief executive has had a pay freeze for
a year.
