CITB e-learning
The Construction Industry Training Board has launched three computer-based
training systems to improve safety and supervision in the sector. The courses
cover management and supervisory responsibility, construction health and safety
regulations and working safely in a confined space. All programmes include

Skills for life success
Remploy’s 80-strong, mainly disabled workforce is using the Government’s
Skills For Life initiative to help increase basic literacy and numeracy
standards at its Mansfield plant. The firm has teamed up with West
Nottinghamshire College to drive up basic skills among staff who, because of
illness, have missed schooling, and need improved adult skills. Â www.remploy.co.uk
Vocational exam push
The National Training Organisation for Engineering Manufacture is urging its
80,000 members to improve links with schools and ensure the success of new
vocational GCSEs. The group’s chief executive Michael Sanderson said role models
from successful blue-chip firms should go to schools and explain opportunities www.emta.org.uk
Online training gold
The Manchester NHS Agency has won gold at the Institute of IT Training
Awards for the best online training project. Of 165 students on the programme,
89 per cent completed the course. The results of a European Diving Licence Exam
recorded a 92 per cent pass rate, compared to the national average of 79 per

Farmer workshops
The Institute of Grocery Distribution has run its first farmer training
workshop, following the foot and mouth epidemic. The workshops aim to provide
farmers with the latest information on retail structure and supply chain
issues. It included a tour of a Safeway supermarket to help candidates
understand the day-to-day operation of food retail. Tesco, Asda and Sainsbury’s

Council qualifications
Ninety managers from Kent County Council have gained vocational awards
through the Assessment Centre for National Qualifications. The candidates
tackled a range of courses and were praised by the council chairman for gaining
the qualifications while working full-time. The awards included diplomas in
management, NVQs and assessor qualifications. Â www.kent.gov.uk
