HR-related/specific courses: MA Human Resource Management and MA International Human Resource Management. Both courses are full-time for 12 months and are accredited by the CIPD. Both lead to graduate membership of the CIPD. HRM modules also feature in the undergraduate business management courses.

Founded: Originates back to 1834 when the School of Medicine and Surgery was established. After various guises and mergers, it became the University of Newcastle-Upon-Tyne in 1963.

College CV: Newcastle’s postgraduate management courses are extremely popular. It accepts applications up to a year before the start of the programme.

Star HR academics: Dr Steve Hughes, Director of Graduate Studies at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne Business School. His research includes trade and labour standards, regional graduate integration in Asia Pacific and development of an international labour standards regime. He was invited to act as an external adviser to governmental and non-governmental organisations on the strength of his collaborative work in the UK and NZ. Professor Stephen Proctor, whose recent research projects have covered teamworking and “the new flexible firm”. He is co-founder and organising committee member of the International Workshop on Teamworking and is co-author of Macmillan’s Teamworking. Professor John Leopold is Deputy Director of the Business School and co-editor of The Strategic Management of Human Resources (Pearson education). He has published widely on HR on Greenfield sites and the management of working time.
