Redundancy risk as Consignia announces 30,000 job losses

Consignia
is planning to axe 30,000 jobs over the next 18 months as part of a £1.2bn
cost-cutting exercise.

John
Roberts, chief executive of Consignia, told a House of Commons select committee
that cost cutting on this scale might be necessary due the losses the
organisation has incurred.

The
redundancies are expected to come from a range of departments, including
sorting and delivery jobs, administration and managerial positions.

Strike
action could happen in the new year when the "no strike" agreement between
the Communications’ Workers Union and the company runs out. Wildcat strikes,
which dogged the company earlier this year, could once again cripple the
company.
