Education - further and higher

Buckinghamshire Chilterns University College

by Personnel Today 7 Sep 2005
by Personnel Today 7 Sep 2005

HR-specific and related courses:  MA  and BA Hons HR Management.  The BA Hons is a two-year, part-time CIPD Professional Development Scheme, leading to Graduate Membership of the CIPD (the main emphasis of the programme is the development of professional knowledge and competence for personnel and development practitioners).  Lastly, our MBA  program allows students to choose human resource management as a specific discipline (an International HRM option is one of the possible course components).

Founded:  Buckinghamshire Chilterns University College has been established for more than 100 years and in March 1999 was awarded University College status, becoming Buckinghamshire Chilterns University College.

College CV:  The university is based on three campuses in Buckinghamshire (in High Wycombe and Chalfont) and is only 30 minutes’ drive from London Heathrow airport. There are around 11,000 full- and part-time students and international students make up 15% of the student population with 87 countries represented. It has already established a considerable reputation in the field of research, with major national awards and substantial research funding. It has strong links with industry and commerce to ensure that all courses are relevant to the finding of employment. All students have the opportunity to learn another language.

Entry: MBA (HRM) programme: must have a good Honours degree and be at least 23 years of age. Applications may be accepted, subject to interview, from candidates who have at least three years’ business experience and necessary prior experiential learning in the functional disciplines included in stage one of the programme. BA course: passes in at least two A-levels or equivalent (GNVQ Advanced at merit level, Btec National Diploma, International Baccalaureate, Abitur, etc); 12 points at A; and GCSE passes in mathematics and English language or equivalent. Applications are welcomed from mature students without formal qualifications but with proven ability. For CIPD-related courses, contact the course manager direct (for details of how to do this, see website below); some candidates may qualify for exemption from the Leadership and Management year and enter directly into the second year of the programme.

Star academics: Wendy Yellowley has gained direct experience within several blue-chip companies across the UK, Australia and Japan; Marilyn Farmer has a wide range of experience in applied management and education research, careers education and guidance and staff development, gained largely within the public sector; Andrew Leleux  whose specialist areas are employee resourcing and reward and management skills formerly served as editor to the Journal of European Business Education published by the Business School; Richard Vale has conducted comparative studies of workplace resistance and industrial conflict in Britain, France, Italy and Spain. His other specialist areas include cultural influences on managerial behaviour and the cultural differences between Western and Eastern countries.
