Founded  1992

College CV  A modern university, but one with roots that go back to the 1930s. It has spent over £50m on redeveloping the campus on a single site in central Middlesbrough, including £5m on renovating the Clarendon Building, home of Teesside Business School.

It calls itself the Opportunity University, aiming to be diverse and inclusive with courses ranging from access programmes and NVQ level 3 up to doctoral research degrees and higher doctoral programmes.

Teesside Business School offers a broad portfolio of undergraduate and postgraduate courses (including the BA & MA Human Resource management) and has developing research and consultancy expertise led by the School’s six  professors and focusing on three research centres: the Centre for Entrepreneurship and SME Development, the Centre for Leadership and Organisational Change and the Centre for Public Service Management.

MA Course Details:  Accredited by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), the course addresses a wide spectrum of people management practices providing opportunities for work-based activities, conference attendance and residential workshops.  The programme can be completed over two years part-time or one year full-time and is designed for people either currently employed in human resource management/development or those seeking an opportunity to enter the profession. It may also be of interest to line managers with significant people management responsibilities.

Participants who wish to gain membership of the CIPD will be required to become student members of the Institute after enrolment.  CIPD Licentiate membership is awarded on completion of the MA.  Participants seeking full graduate membership of the CIPD will also need to complete the Postgraduate Certificate in Management or an equivalent qualification.

Star HR academics  Paul Iles is Professor of Strategic HR management. Iles has an international reputation and is the author of Managing Staff Selection and Assessment and co-author of Changing Patterns of Management Development in the UK. His main research interests are in managerial assessment and selection, management development, managing change, career development, oganisational learning and knowledge management, diversity and international human resource management and human resource development.

Alan Lawton is Professor of Organisational Ethics and Head of Research, having joined Teesside Business School from the Open University. His main research, teaching and consultancy interests are in public services management and organisational and management ethics. He has published numerous books on public services management including Ethical Management for the Public Services (Open University Press). He has also contributed articles to the leading journals in the field.

David Preece is Professor of Technology Management and Organisational Studies. He has researched and published widely on organisational and technological change, human resource management and quality management. He is Editor of the Routledge Studies in Technology, Work and Organizations and is co-editor of Technology, Organizations and Innovation: Critical Perspectives on Business and Management.
