DfES announces Modern Apprencticeships for all 16/17 year olds

The Government has announced plans to improve on-the-job
training for young people in England.

It wants more than a quarter of young people to enter Modern
Apprenticeships before they are 22 years old by 2004.

The Government, working with the Learning and Skills
Council, will implement key recommendations made by the Modern Apprenticeship
Advisory Committee including:

· a national framework for apprenticeship which defines
basic standards and aims to strengthen the relationship between the employer
and the apprentice

· all 16 and 17 year olds with five or more GCSE passes at
grades A* to G will be entitled to a Modern Apprenticeship place from September
2004

A three-year, £16 million marketing campaign will begin
early in the new year to promote apprenticeships and boost take-up among
employers and young people.
