TUC calls for more measures to close equal pay gap

The
TUC has welcomed a change in the law which will mean organisations at gender
employment tribunals will have to prove they have not discriminated against
staff but wants more done to close the equal pay gap.

The
law change shifts the burden of proof from the employee to the employer.

TUC
general secretary, John Monks, said the TUC backs the move, which came into the
force last week but is not convinced it will make a real difference.

"This
is a welcome move. Once again employees have gained new rights from
Europe," said TUC General Secretary, John Monks.

"However,
we think the practical impact will be relatively modest. Other measures are
needed such as statutory pay audits if we are to make a real impact on the pay
gap and other issues."
