Permanent salary increases at four-year low

Permanent salaries increased at the slowest rate for four
years during July according to the Recruitment and Employment Confederation’s
monthly survey.

Recruitment consultancies reported that permanent salaries
rose at the lowest rate in the REC survey’s four-year history and the growth of
temporary hourly pay rates was the weakest for more than two years.

The report states that growth of wages and salaries has
slowed sharply since the start of the year, in line with improved staff
availability.

It also shows that the availability of permanent staff improved
substantially in July, up for the second month running and rising at the
fastest rate since March 1999.

The availability of temporary and contract staff rose at the
fastest rate since April 1999, with the greater staff availability linked to
recent redundancies.
