Dental treatment in the workplace

Bupa has set up a new workplace dentistry service. Known
as  "dentistry in a box" the
service comprises hi-tech dental equipment contained in mobile units, little
bigger than the average domestic refrigerator.

The service offers dental check-ups and a full range of
treatment. Bupa claims that an in-house clinic held for just one day a week can
save up to 1,750 lost working hours a year for a company with 500 staff.

This is calculated on the basis that most people will need
to take a half-day out of work for a dental appointment. In order to use the
service, the company needs to provide a room fitted with a standard 13-amp
electrical socket, a sink, two telephone points and a vinyl floor. Bupa claims
that using the dentistry in box equipment, its dentists can treat any problem
on-site, even wisdom teeth removal.

Only highly complex work such as implants would need to be
carried out elsewhere. The service is available to all firms, regardless of
whether they are Bupa members.
