Fatigue Index
A "fatigue
index" has been developed by the HSE following research by the Defence
Evaluation and Research Agency. The index gives a method for determining the
likelihood of tiredness arising from key factors present in the workplace.

Injuries
in decline
The HSC’s latest
workplace safety statistics show a fall in worker injuries in the year from 1
April 1999 to 31 March 2000. The death rate fell from 253 to 218, while major
injuries fell from 29,053 to 28,939. However, construction fatalities rose
again after reaching the lowest level ever recorded in 1998/99.

Quarrying
safety
Tough new targets
which aim to cut the number of injuries in the quarrying industry by 2005 have
been announced as the first sector-specific goal in the Government’s
Revitalising Health and Safety strategy launched in June. Quarrying has 20
times the fatal injury rate of British industry as a whole and the strategy has
industry-wide backing.

Customs
and Excise deputy chairman Timothy Walker has been appointed new
director-general of the HSE, succeeding Jenny Bacon. He takes up his post on 1
October.
