Pharmaceutical
company GlaxoSmithKline is to cut 1,000 jobs in the UK.
The
company, formed from last year’s merger of GlaxoWellcome and SmithKline
Beecham, has cut the jobs as part of the first phase of restructuring.
It
plans to cut 500 jobs at its asthma inhaler manufacturing plant in Liverpool,
and 400 jobs at a site in County Durham.
The
job cuts are planned over the next three years.
“We
fully recognise the impact these proposals would have on some of our staff and
we regret the need for the loss of jobs. We are committed to providing
extensive support to affected employees and their communities” said Tim Tyson,
president of global manufacturing and supply at GlaxoSmithKline.
“Inevitably
this merger meant that there would be job losses. However, the manufacturing
base of the company has been secured and over 10,000 UK manufacturing jobs will
survive,” said Jim Mowatt, T&G national secretary.
