UK jobs at Swedish telecoms firm
Ericsson are under threat after the company announced plans to cut 10,000 posts
worldwide.
More than half the job
losses will come from outside Sweden, but the company has not revealed where
the cuts will be enforced.
Ericsson employs 1,800
staff in the UK at Burgess Hill, West Sussex, and Basingstoke, Hampshire.
The announcement
follows the mobile phones giant reporting a first quarter pre-tax loss of
£333m, reflecting the depressed state of the telecoms market. Ericsson refused
to say which sites in the UK may be affected.
Bob Shannon, national
officer for the Amalgamated Engineering and Electrical Union (AEEU), said,
"We want to avoid any compulsory redundancies.

"The union has an
ongoing dialogue with Ericsson and we want to pursue a number of alternatives
to job cuts, such as outsourcing or joint ventures."
