Four out of ten employers believe that long commuting times
cause serious recruitment difficulties, according to research by the
Recruitment Confidence Index.
The research, published by the Cranfield School of
Management, shows that a third of employers agree with the statement that
employees with long travel times to work are more likely to look for new jobs.
Difficulties recruiting and retaining staff are most
pronounced at administrative level, and in these functions 25 per cent of
organisations believe lengthy commutes are a problem.
Despite the problems that many regularly face in their
journeys to work, most UK organisations do not offer alternative means of
travel. Efforts to stem employee commuting costs include subsidised parking,
which is offered by 14 per cent, and travel subsidy, which is offered by 7 per
cent.
