Motorola jobs safe in Scotland

Plans
by Motorola to axe 4000 jobs worldwide will have minimal impact on its
operations in Scotland according to a company spokesman.

The
US semiconductor manufacturer announced the job cuts on Friday in a bid to
improve profitability in this sector.

Motorola
will achieve the 4000 planned job cuts by terminating temporary workers’
contracts and voluntary and compulsory redundancies.

A
Motorola spokesman said the firm’s two plants in East Kilbride and South
Queensbury are unlikely to be affected by the proposed job losses.

However
the company refused to disclose which sites would be hit by the job cuts and
when they would be implemented.

The
Scottish semiconductor arm of Motorola employs about 5,000 employees out of its
total UK workforce of 10,000.
