Rail unions balloting over underground safety fears

Rail unions ASLEF and the RMT are balloting thousands of
tube drivers and staff over strike action if London Underground part-privatises
the tube service.

The ballot of 9,000 members of the railway unions ASLEF,
RMT and the TSSA is over fears that the new proposals will make the tube
unsafe.

The unions will announce the result of the ballot on
January 25.

LU says it is must go ahead with the plans because it is
obliged to enforce the government’s decision to sell off the underground.

A spokesman for LU said, “This is a government policy and
London Underground, being a government-owned company, has no choice but to go
through with it.”
