Half of the UK’s businesses have struggled to recruit
skilled workers over the last six months according to the results of a new
survey.
The findings of Lloyds TSB Commercial’s biannual Business in
Britain survey revealed that more firms than ever were finding it hard to find
both skilled and unskilled labour.
Only one-in-five businesses had recruiting problems in the
early 1990s.
“According to those polled the yawning skills gap is turning
into a hazardous abyss across all sectors. In terms of recruiting unskilled
staff, similar trends are also emerging,” said Michael Riding, managing
director of Lloyds TSB.
“Local labour supply just cannot match demand and there is a
very real danger that this could hamper British growth in the future.”
