Bank turns to do-it-yourself HR

Barclays intends to move to a web-based HR self-service system in a bid to cut costs.

Its model is based on SAP technology and intended to reduce costs 35 per cent. Currently Barclays’ 60,000 staff are serviced by 1,500 HR staff. If successful, the self-service system should reduce the number of HR staff needed.

Speaking at a conference in London, Richard Davies, HR change programmes director for Barclays, said, “The selection of a self-service system would help cut down on time spent on administrative functions.”

Within the HRSS model is an employee self-service portal, which will provide functions such as holiday leave and absenteeism authorisation. Davies anticipates that as usage of the portal increases the role of HR in handling enquiries will diminish.
